The thing nobody tells you about GIFs on X
X does not store GIFs as GIFs. The moment one is uploaded it is transcoded into a silent, looping MP4 and the original file is thrown away. Every GIF you have ever seen on the platform is a video wearing a GIF badge.
That means no downloader can give you back a real .gif file, because there is not one to give. Tools claiming to are converting the MP4 into a GIF afterwards, which makes the file several times larger, cuts the colour depth to 256, and looks worse than what you started with. This tool hands you the MP4 the post actually contains.
How to save a GIF from X
Copy the link to the post and paste it in the box above. The share button gives you a link and so does your browser’s address bar. Both x.com and the older twitter.com addresses work, and the tracking parameters the share sheet tacks on are ignored.
The download then comes straight from X’s own servers. All we do is look up where the file lives and pass your browser the address.
Nothing is uploaded, because nothing needs to be
Most free downloaders route the file through their own servers. That gives them a copy of whatever you were downloading, and it costs them bandwidth on every request, which is usually why those pages are wrapped in adverts.
We do not do that. The lookup asks X where the media is and your browser fetches it directly. There is no copy on our side and no upload from yours. The one visible consequence is that browsers sometimes open the file in a new tab rather than saving it, because the file belongs to another site. Right-click and choose Save video as if that happens.
What this will not do
It will not touch protected accounts. A protected post is not readable without being an approved follower, so there is nothing for any tool to fetch, and a site offering to do it anyway is asking for your password so it can try logging in as you. There is never a good reason to give a downloader your login.
It also will not help you pass someone else’s work off as your own. Saving a public file to watch, or resharing it with credit, is ordinary use. Republishing it as original is not, and that is a decision about what you do next rather than about this page.
