How to post different sized photos on Instagram
Instagram accepts a range of aspect ratios and crops anything outside it. Taller than 4:5 or wider than 1.91:1 and the app decides where to cut — usually not where you would have.
The fix is to crop before uploading rather than after. Resize to the preset you want, check the preview, and Instagram has nothing left to decide.
Carousels: the first image sets the rule
This is the one that surprises people. In a multi-photo post, Instagram applies the first image’s aspect ratio to every image in the carousel. A portrait first slide followed by landscape photos means the landscapes get cropped to portrait.
Resize every image in a carousel to the same preset before you upload. There is no way to mix ratios within one post, and no tool can change that — it is how the format works.
Why portrait is usually the right default
At 1080×1350 a post occupies more vertical space on a phone than a square does, which means longer on screen as someone scrolls. That is the entire argument, and it is a good one.
Landscape is the opposite — it takes the least room and passes fastest. Worth using when the image genuinely is landscape, and worth avoiding by default.
Nothing here is uploaded
The resizing runs in your browser. The file is read locally, drawn to a canvas, and saved straight back to your device. It never reaches us, which means there is nothing to store, nothing to leak, and no reason to ask you to sign in.
Once the post looks right
Sizing controls how a post occupies the screen; the caption controls whether anyone stays. Our caption generator and line break generator handle that side, and the character counter will tell you where the feed cuts you off.
For the first hour after posting, Instagram likes and views are what give a post early momentum — or try 10 free likes first.
