Stories and videos measure two completely different things. A video's view count tells you how far the algorithm carried it — mostly to people who have never heard of you. A story's view count tells you how many of the people who already follow you actually opened something you made. One measures reach; the other measures relationship, and the second number is the more honest of the two.

That makes stories an unusually direct diagnostic. If you have forty thousand followers and your stories get two hundred views, the followers are not an audience — they are a number. TikTok can see that pattern as clearly as you can, and an account whose own followers ignore its posts is not an account the system has much reason to push into new feeds.

Stories also sit in prime real estate. They appear as rings at the top of the follower feed rather than competing in the endless For You scroll, which means they are one of the very few placements on TikTok where being followed still guarantees you a shot at attention. Wasting that slot on posts nobody opens is expensive in a way that is easy to miss.

And there is the ordinary social-proof effect. Viewers are more inclined to open a story that appears well-watched, and far more inclined to reply to one. A story with a healthy view count reads as part of a conversation already in progress; one sitting at single digits reads as shouting into a room that has emptied out.

Most creators track the wrong number when they want to know how healthy their account is. Followers are cumulative and never go backwards on their own, so the figure keeps looking encouraging long after the audience behind it stopped paying attention. Story views are the correction: a live, daily read of how many of those followers are still opening things.

The ratio is the useful part. Divide story views by follower count and you get a rough attention rate — a number that tends to be far smaller than creators expect, and far more predictive of what a video will do. Accounts whose stories are opened by a meaningful share of their following usually find their videos travel well, because there is a real base of engaged people to seed each upload.

Watching that ratio over time is more instructive than watching either number alone. A rising follower count with a flat story-view count means you are accumulating people who do not care. A flat follower count with a rising story-view count means the audience you have is warming up — which is generally the better position to be in, and the one that precedes a breakout.

This is also why boosting stories has a different purpose from boosting videos. A video boost is about reaching outward. A story boost is about how your account presents to the people already there and to anyone assessing it — the number that says this is an account whose posts get opened.
