YouTube Thumbnail Maker

Design a 1280x720 thumbnail with a bold outlined headline, your own background and an optional face cutout, then download it as PNG or JPG. Everything happens in your browser.

Drag the headline or the cutout to move them. Everything stays in your browser.

At the size people actually see it

This is roughly how big a thumbnail is in a suggested-videos column. If the headline is hard to read here, cut words or raise the size.

How to make a thumbnail with this tool

Start with a background. A sharp frame from the video itself is usually the best choice, because it promises exactly what the viewer will get; a plain colour gradient works for talking-head or list videos. Then write the headline, pick a layout preset, and drag the text and the cutout until the composition feels balanced. When the small preview reads clearly, download it.

The presets only move things around. They never change your colours or your wording, so you can flip between “text left, face right” and a bottom banner to compare them without redoing any styling.

What makes a thumbnail readable at real size

A thumbnail is designed at 1280 pixels wide and judged at a fraction of that. In a suggested-videos column or on a phone it might be a couple of hundred pixels across, and at that size detail disappears. That is why the editor shows a second, small copy of your design underneath the main one. If you cannot read the headline there, neither can anyone scrolling past it.

The fixes are almost always the same. Use fewer words, because the title sits right beside the thumbnail and does not need repeating. Make the words bigger. Give them a thick dark outline or a box behind them so they hold up over a busy photo. Darken the background a little so the text and the face separate from it. One strong contrast beats three competing ones.

Faces, cutouts and the outline trick

Many successful thumbnails pair a short headline with a clear, expressive face. If you want to do the same, save a photo of yourself with the background removed as a PNG and add it as the cutout layer. The white outline option traces the edge of a transparent image, which lifts it off the background in the way you see on a lot of channels. There is a flip button too, so you can make the face look towards the text rather than away from it.

This tool does not remove backgrounds itself, and it does not need to send your photo anywhere to do what it does. Your image is read by your own browser and drawn on a canvas on your device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is no account.

Leave room for the timestamp

YouTube puts the video length in a small dark badge in the bottom right corner of every thumbnail. Anything you place there gets covered. The dashed box in the editor marks roughly where it sits, so you can keep the last word of your headline or the edge of your face clear of it. The box is only a guide; it never appears in the image you download.

After the thumbnail

A thumbnail and a title work as a pair, and the tags and description do the quieter work of telling YouTube what the video is about. Our YouTube tag generator helps with that side, and the YouTube thumbnail downloader lets you save any public video’s thumbnail at full size to study what works in your niche. Curious what the views could earn once the channel is monetised? The YouTube money calculator turns daily views and an RPM range into a monthly estimate.

Once a video is live, getting it in front of people is a separate job from designing it. That is what our YouTube services cover, including YouTube views and YouTube subscribers.
