How the tags are chosen
The list starts with your main keyword and the forms people actually search for it in: tutorial, for beginners, tips, guide and the current year. Then it adds phrases taken from your title, any extra keywords you list, and your channel name so branded searches find you. Single broad words go last because they are the least useful.
If the result would run past 500 characters, the lowest-priority tags are dropped first, so the ones that matter most always survive.
What tags can and cannot do
Worth being straight about, because most tag tools are not. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in how videos are found. They help most with words people misspell and with telling YouTube what an ambiguous title is about. They will not lift a video on their own.
What moves a video is the title, the thumbnail, how long people keep watching, and the first couple of lines of the description. Spend your time there, then use this to fill the tags box properly in a minute instead of guessing.
A good tag set in practice
- Lead with the exact phrase you want to rank for.
- Add two or three close variations, including how people phrase it as a question.
- Include your channel name, so viewers searching for you find more of your videos.
- Leave out anything the video is not actually about.
