The limits that matter

An Instagram bio is 150 characters and the field stops accepting input at exactly that point. A caption can run to 2,200 — but only around the first 125 appear in the feed before the rest collapses behind “more”, which means the opening line is carrying almost the entire caption.

TikTok is the one that surprises people: its bio is 80 characters, roughly half of Instagram’s. A bio written for Instagram usually will not fit, and the app truncates rather than warning you clearly.

Why this counter disagrees with others

Most character counters use the browser’s built-in string length, which counts UTF-16 units rather than characters. A single emoji counts as two. A flag counts as four. A family emoji can count as eleven. Text written in one of those Unicode “fonts” counts double.

This one counts by Unicode code point instead, which tracks what the platforms actually measure far more closely. If another tool says your bio is over the limit and this one says it fits, that is usually the reason — and the app itself is the tie breaker worth trusting.

Spaces, line breaks and hashtags all count

Everything counts. This matters most for bios, where a nicely spaced layout can spend twenty of your 150 characters on blank lines before you have written anything. If you are formatting a bio with line breaks, count it afterwards rather than before.

Hashtags count too, on both platforms. A block of thirty at the end of a caption consumes real budget, so it is worth deciding how many you want before writing around them.

Writing to fit

For the bio itself, the Instagram bio generator and TikTok bio generator produce options that are already close to the right length. Add structure with bio symbols, style it with the font generator, then come back here to confirm it fits.
