The reason a mention outperforms a hashtag is not technical, it is social. A hashtag is a category anyone can join by typing it. A mention is a choice somebody made to name you specifically, and every reader understands the difference without thinking about it. That small piece of implied endorsement is doing most of the work when someone taps through.

This is also why the quality of the mentioning account matters far more than its size. A handle named by an account with a real history and a plausible interest in the subject reads as a recommendation. The same handle named by an empty profile reads as an advertisement, and the tap rate reflects that gap immediately. Volume cannot compensate for it, because the mechanism is trust rather than exposure.

The audience you reach this way is also unusually well-qualified. They were already reading a post about something adjacent to what you do, they were engaged enough to be in the comments or the caption, and they chose to tap a name rather than being shown a video. Almost every step of that path filters for interest, which is why the visits mentions produce convert better than an equivalent number of passive impressions.

The limitation is scale. There is no version of this that reaches a hundred thousand people credibly, because credibility is precisely what does not survive being industrialised. Mentions are a small, high-quality channel, and the providers offering them by the tens of thousands have quietly converted them into a different and much worse product.
