60 Instagram Bio Ideas for Small Businesses

A business bio is not a personal bio with a phone number added. It has to answer what, where and how to buy — in 150 characters, before the visitor leaves.

A personal bio is trying to make you interesting. A business bio is trying to remove friction — and the friction is always the same three questions: what do you sell, where are you, and how do I buy it? A visitor who cannot answer all three in a few seconds does not message you to find out. They leave.

Sixty templates below, grouped by business type. Swap in your details; the structure is the part that is doing the work.

The three questions, in order

Look back at the templates and you will notice they all sequence the same way. That is deliberate.

  • What. The category, in plain words a customer would use. Not “curating experiences” — pizza, nails, electrician. Search inside Instagram is increasingly how local businesses get found, and it reads plain words.
  • Where. City or area, always, even if you are online-only — in which case “ships worldwide” or “UK delivery” is the equivalent. Location is the most common missing element on small-business profiles and it is the one that ends the visit.
  • How to buy. One route, stated. Book, DM, call, order. Two routes halve the conversion rate because the visitor now has a decision to make instead of an action to take.

A fourth element is optional and often powerful: a constraint. “12 weddings a year”, “sourdough Thu–Sun”, “6 spaces”. Scarcity that is genuinely true both qualifies the enquiry and raises the perceived value. Do not invent one — a constraint you cannot honour is worse than none.

Six mistakes that cost small businesses money

  • No location. The single most common and most expensive omission. A visitor who cannot tell whether you are in their city has no reason to continue.
  • Opening hours in the bio. They change, and stale hours actively mislead. Use the profile's own business fields, and use the bio line for something permanent.
  • Three links, four calls to action. A menu is not a call to action. Pick the one thing you want a customer to do.
  • Slogans over specifics. “Quality you can trust” is what every competitor also says. “Everything made here” is a fact only some of them can claim.
  • An unmonitored DM route. If the bio says DM to order, someone has to be reading them. An unanswered enquiry is worse than no invitation to send one.
  • Assuming the bio is the funnel. Story highlights carry price lists, past work, delivery areas and FAQs far better than 150 characters ever will. The bio's job is to get someone to look at those.

The credibility problem that sits above the bio

Here is the uncomfortable part for a small business specifically. A customer deciding whether to trust you with money reads your follower count, your recent post engagement and your bio as a single impression, and they do it before they read a word of what you wrote.

For a shopfront business that is genuinely consequential — an account with 40 followers and two likes per post reads as closed, whether or not it is. That is a presentation problem rather than a copy problem, and no amount of bio rewriting addresses it.

Where it is worth spending: a follower count that reads as an established local business rather than a new one, profile visits to get people to the bio in the first place, and story views — the number a small business actually posts to daily, and the one that tells a customer the account is still being run.

Size it sensibly. Our guide to buying Instagram followers safely explains why an order too large for your engagement makes a business profile look worse rather than better — which is the opposite of what you were paying for. And if you want the wording drafted rather than adapted, the Instagram bio generator works from a business type and a location.
