Instagram Symbols and What They Mean
Every icon you see in the app, grouped by where it appears — stories, posts, DMs and profiles.
Story symbols
The icons that appear while you are posting or viewing stories, which is where most confusion happens because they are transient.
- Circular arrow / refresh
- The story failed to upload and can be retried. Almost always a dropped connection rather than an account problem — tap it to try again.
- Eye with a number
- Viewer count on your own story. Tapping it opens the full list of who watched, in Instagram's own ordering rather than chronological.
- Chevron or arrow up
- There is a link, a sticker action or more content to open — swipe up or tap through.
- Green ring around a profile picture
- A story shared only with that person's Close Friends list, so not everyone who follows them can see it.
- Faded or grey ring
- You have already watched everything in that person's current story.
Post and feed symbols
The row of controls under every post, plus the markers that appear on the post itself.
- Heart
- Like. A filled heart means you have liked it; the count is the total.
- Speech bubble
- Comments. Tapping it opens the thread; the number is the comment count.
- Paper plane
- Share. Opens the sheet to send the post in a direct message or to your story.
- Bookmark / ribbon
- Save. Adds the post to your private saved collection. The poster is not notified and cannot see who saved it.
- Shopping bag
- The post has products tagged, or the account has a shop. Tapping opens the product rather than the comments.
- Stacked squares
- A carousel — more than one photo or video in the same post. Swipe sideways.
- Small speaker with a line
- Audio is muted. Tap to unmute; Instagram remembers the setting between videos.
Direct message symbols
Icons inside DMs, where several have meanings that are not obvious from the drawing.
- Screenshot indicator
- Shown to the sender when a disappearing photo or video was screenshotted. It does not apply to ordinary messages.
- Camera with a circle
- Send a disappearing photo or video that can be viewed once, or replayed once, before it is gone.
- Double circle / seen
- The message has been opened. Instagram shows read state in DMs by default.
- Bomb or timer
- A view-once message. It disappears after opening, which is why it cannot be reopened later.
- Filled vs hollow ring on the inbox icon
- A filled or coloured indicator means unread messages or a pending request waiting in a separate tab.
Profile and account symbols
What appears on a profile, including the ones people most often mistake for something else.
- Blue tick
- A verified account — Instagram has confirmed it represents the real person, brand or entity. It cannot be typed; the look-alike characters that circulate are not the badge.
- Grid, reel and tagged tabs
- The three tabs under a bio: grid posts, Reels, and posts other people have tagged that account in.
- Person with a plus
- Follow, or add to a close-friends or suggested list depending on where it appears.
- Bell
- Post notifications for that specific account — separate from following them.
- Padlock
- A private account. You have to be approved before you can see anything.
Why the icons keep changing
Instagram redesigns its interface regularly, and icons move, change shape or quietly disappear between app versions. That is why two people can compare phones and see different symbols in the same place — one of them is simply on a newer build.
The descriptions above are written by behaviour rather than by appearance for that reason. What an icon does tends to survive a redesign; what it looks like often does not.
The one symbol worth being careful with
The blue verification tick is the only icon on this page that carries a claim about who you are. Characters that look similar circulate widely and can be pasted into a display name, but using one to suggest Instagram verified you is impersonation — and unlike anything else here, it can genuinely cost you the account.
