What these actually are

Instagram does not have a font setting. Neither does TikTok. What looks like a font change in someone’s bio is a substitution: each ordinary letter has been swapped for a different Unicode character that happens to resemble a styled version of it. “Bold” text is really Mathematical Bold Capital A and its neighbours, which exist so mathematicians can write equations.

That sounds like a technicality but it explains everything else about how these behave. The output is plain text, which is why you can paste it into a bio, a caption, a comment or a DM and it survives. It is also why nothing here can break your account — you are typing characters that are part of the same standard as the alphabet.

Where it works, and where it does not

Bios, captions, comments, story text and DMs all accept it on both platforms. Your @username does not — handles are restricted to letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so no generator can style one no matter what it claims.

Some apps also strip combining marks, which is what strikethrough, underline and glitch styles are built from. If one of those looks fine here but plain after pasting, that is the app cleaning the text rather than the tool failing.

The accessibility trade-off nobody mentions

A screen reader does not see “bold Z”. It sees Mathematical Bold Capital Z and either reads that name aloud or skips it. A bio written entirely in styled characters is close to unusable for a blind visitor, and the same substitution makes your text harder to match when someone searches for you.

The practical compromise: style a word or a single line for emphasis, and leave your name, your handle and anything you want found in ordinary letters. That gets you the visual distinctiveness without making the profile unreadable to people using assistive technology or unfindable in search.

Once the profile looks right
