What you can learn from another video’s tags
Tags show how a creator described their video to YouTube: the exact phrase they were aiming for, the misspellings they wanted to catch, and whether they put their channel name in for branded search. Looking at the tags on the top few videos for a search tells you which phrasing your niche has settled on.
They also show what does not matter. Plenty of videos with millions of views have five tags or none at all. If the best videos in your niche have empty tag fields, that tells you where the effort should go instead.
Tags are a small signal, and YouTube says so
YouTube’s own help says tags play a minimal role in discovery and are most useful for words people often misspell. Titles, thumbnails, the first lines of the description, and how long people keep watching all matter more. Use what you find here to fill the tags box well in a couple of minutes, not as a ranking strategy.
Using what you find without copying
- Keep only tags that describe your video. Mismatched tags can break YouTube’s spam policy.
- Swap the other creator’s channel name for your own.
- Note the phrasing, then put the main phrase in your title, where it counts far more.
When you are ready to write your own set, the YouTube tag generator builds one from your title and trims it to Studio’s 500-character limit. The YouTube thumbnail downloader saves the same video’s thumbnail at full size, which is the other half of studying what works.
Getting the video seen
Good metadata helps a video get understood; early views and likes help it get tested with a wider audience. See the YouTube growth page, or go straight to YouTube views, likes and subscribers.
