What an Instagram bio is actually for
The bio is one of about five things a visitor sees before deciding whether to follow, and it is the only one where you get to speak directly. Most bios waste it describing the account holder — a job title, a city, a string of emoji — when the job is to tell a stranger what they get by following.
The difference is small and it changes the conversion rate. Naming your profession tells someone who you are. Naming what arrives in their feed if they tap follow tells them why they should. The second is a reason; the first is a label.
Working within 150 characters
Instagram allows 150 characters, and the constraint is genuinely useful — it forces you to choose one thing. If you do three things, lead with the one you most want to be known for rather than listing all three at equal weight.
Line breaks are supported and worth using, because a bio in three short lines is scanned faster than the same text in one block. A common effective structure is: what you post, who it is for, and one line telling people what to do next.
It is also worth pairing the bio with your highlight covers, since they sit directly beneath it and are the only other element that can answer a question before it is asked. Together those two do most of the work of converting a profile visit into a follow.
The bio is the last thing standing between a profile visit and a follow. Getting people to the profile in the first place is a separate job, and usually the harder one. Our Instagram followers and Instagram profile visits handle that side.
